INTENTIONAL UGLINESS

"Bones Park" is a speculative project that examines the relationship between history and space, and between preservation and destruction in Jerusalem—a city full of hidden stories, including the story of Gan HaAtsmaut (Independence Park).

This series of souvenirs was born from the apparent contradiction between the site's past as an ancient cemetery and the park's scenic appearance today—the lush green grass and the small stream. The designs in this project were inspired by the visual elements found throughout the park—from the engravings on the Mamluk and Crusader tombstones to the park's decorative and botanical elements. To celebrate the park, the designer also created a new typeface that functions as part of a trilingual system. The new font was inspired by the epitaphs on the park's tombstones and ancient street signs in the area.

The project seeks to uncover the hidden graves and give voice to lost stories. Perhaps on your next visit to the park, as you immerse yourself in the tranquility of its urban nature, you will hear the roar of the sacred lion.
